Welcome to the first of many posts on festivus birds 2011.Join us as we count down the days to what we hope will be the Baltimore Ravens second Super Bowl Championship season. In 2000 the Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl XXXV championship team having been banned from using the word “playoff” by then coach Brian Billick took a page from Frank Costanza and began refering to the playoffs as Festivus. In keeping with the tradition they also coined the phrase Festivus Maximus which refered to Super Bowl XXXV.The team obviously went on to win the celebrated event.Coach Billicks intent on banning the phrase was to keep his team motivated and focused on the task at hand A.KA the rest of the regular season. The traditions of Festivus include the airing of grievances,a meal, followed by the feats of strength in which the head of the household must be pinned in a wrestling match.Until the head man is subdued the holiday continues. If you have no idea what im talking about youre either A) Too young or B)Have been living in a cave for the last 10 years. 11 years later The Baltimore Ravens sit on a record of 8-3 having accomplished a sweep of the hated Pittsburgh Steelers and solid wins against the NY Jets and the Houston Texans. Unfortunately this Ravens team while quite good has had the tendency to blow a few games they have no buissness blowing(see Tennesee,Jacksonville, and Seattle) Some of the talking heads are calling our birds the most overated team in the AFC. While I think this is ridiculous I will admit it is almost inexplicable as to how this team lost to the sub par competition they dropped games too. Therefore I ask of you John Harbaugh, bring out that aluminum pole from under the stairs and let the Festivus activities commence. Despite how much im sure we all would enjoy Cam Cameron trying to pin Haloti Ngata,im refering to the menatality we had in 2000. This team needs to remain focused throughout the stretch leading up to the postseason. With games coming up against some good division teams as well as some supposed gimmies, they need to remain steady and finish strong. While they wont need a Festivus miracle to make the playoffs they will need their playmakers to step up in not just the big games but also in the small ones. From now on we will no longer refer to the playoffs as anything but “Festivus” and the Super Bowl will once again be known as “Festivus Maximus.” Tis the season for Festivus.
